How to download bank statements from online banking
Sign in to online banking on a computer, open the account and look for Statements, Statements & documents or eStatements. Pick the month and download the PDF. Most banks keep several years of PDF statements online, while their CSV or Excel export only covers recent transactions, so older months have to come from the PDFs.

Where banks keep PDF statements
Almost every bank puts PDF statements in the same place: sign in, open the account, then find a Statements area. The label changes; the steps don’t.
- Sign in to online banking on a computer. Apps often show fewer options.
- Open the account you need.
- Look for Statements, Statements & documents, eStatements, Documents or Relevés (France).
- Choose the year and month.
- Download or save the PDF. Repeat for each month.
What the menu is usually called at large banks:

Menus move when banks redesign their sites, so use these as a guide to what to look for. Each bank page has the full steps and that bank’s quirks. For other banks, start from your country: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Mexico or India.
How far back statements go
PDF statements usually go back years; the CSV export usually goes back months. Plan around the PDFs if you need more than the last few months.
| What you need | Typical availability | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Last few weeks or months | CSV, Excel, OFX or QFX export | Account activity or export screen |
| Last 1 to 7 years | PDF statements | Statements area |
| Older than online banking shows | Paper or PDF copies on request | Branch, phone or secure message |
Some examples from our bank pages: TD Canada Trust shows up to 7 years of statements in EasyWeb, NAB up to 7 years in Internet Banking but about 2 in the app, and French banks such as Crédit Agricole often keep relevés for up to 10 years. ANZ’s export reaches back about two years, which is long for an export. When an account closes, access to its statements may end too, so download them before closing it.
CSV export vs PDF statement
The export and the statement are different things. The export is a data file of recent activity; the statement is the official monthly record.
| CSV or Excel export | PDF statement | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Recent activity, a limited window | Every month, often for years |
| Opening and closing balance | Usually missing | Always printed |
| Running balance per row | Sometimes | Usually |
| Accepted as proof (loans, visas, tax) | Rarely | Yes |
| Works in Excel or accounting software | Yes, directly | After conversion |
| Pending transactions | Sometimes included | Never; posted items only |
So: use the export for recent months if your bank offers it. Use PDFs for older months, closed accounts and anything a lender or accountant asked for. To turn PDFs into rows, convert them to Excel, CSV or Google Sheets. The formats guide explains PDF, CSV and OFX in more detail.
Password-protected statement PDFs
Some banks lock statement PDFs with a password. It is common for statements sent by email, especially in India.
- The email explains the format. Typical formats combine letters of your name, your date of birth, a customer ID or digits of your mobile number. The SBI page gives one example.
- Downloaded PDFs are often unlocked. A statement you download after signing in is usually not password-protected, even if the emailed one is.
- Converting a locked PDF. BankConv asks for the password during upload. It is used once to open the file and never stored.
Don’t print a locked PDF to a new PDF to remove the password. That can turn text into an image and make conversion harder.
Download checklist for a full year
Use this when an accountant, lender or tax return needs 12 months.
- Sign in on a computer and open Statements.
- Download each monthly PDF and name it
bank-account-YYYY-MM.pdf. - Check the dates: each statement’s closing balance should equal the next statement’s opening balance. A gap means a missing month.
- Check that each PDF opens and shows every page.
- Convert them in batches; BankConv takes up to 10 PDFs at a time.
- If you need one table, follow how to combine bank statements in Excel.
BankConv never connects to your bank and never asks for banking passwords. You download the PDF yourself, and uploads are deleted after 24 hours. See security.
