Convert NAB statements to Excel or CSV
In NAB Internet Banking, go to Accounts, then Account statements, where you can tick up to 25 PDFs and download them together. BankConv converts them to Excel, CSV or Google Sheets, up to 10 per batch. Expect Cr and Dr suffixes on the balance and brought forward lines at page breaks, both of which need cleaning before you total anything.

Do you need to convert at all?
NAB Internet Banking usually lets you export the transaction list for a chosen date range, with a spreadsheet (CSV) option and formats for money software. The file types offered can vary by account.
Recent transactions only, from Internet Banking on a computer. Statements go back up to 7 years in Internet Banking and about 2 years in the NAB app, as PDF.
NAB export formats: CSV, QIF
What to know about NAB PDFs
- Balances end in Cr or Dr
- The Balance column usually carries a suffix, such as 2,365.05 Cr when the account is in credit. Dr means overdrawn. Turn these into positive and negative numbers before any maths.
- Brought forward and carried forward lines
- Long statements usually repeat the balance at page breaks, with lines such as Brought forward and Carried forward. They aren't transactions, so exclude them from totals.
- Particulars run over several lines
- A single transaction's Particulars can wrap onto a second or third line with a reference or merchant location. Check that each wrapped line joined its transaction instead of becoming a separate row.
Converting NAB statements
NAB statements are usually text-based PDFs, so the transactions come through without retyping. The work after converting is mostly cleaning the balance column. Use the PDF for anything older than the Internet Banking export reaches, or when an accountant asks for full statements for a financial year.
- Download the PDF statements from Accounts, then Account statements.
- Upload them to BankConv.
- Check the rows, then export Excel, CSV or Google Sheets.
Cleaning up and checking
Fix the balance column first. In Excel, this turns 2,365.05 Cr into 2365.05 and a Dr balance into a negative number: =IF(RIGHT(E2,2)=“Dr”,-1,1)*VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(E2,” Cr”,“”),” Dr”,“”),“,”,“”)).
Then check the result yourself:
- Remove brought forward and carried forward lines.
- Spot-check a few wrapped Particulars against the PDF, especially transfers with long references.
- Sum Debits and Credits and compare them with the statement summary.
- Confirm the last balance equals the closing balance.
Set dates to day first before importing. For Xero, see how to import a bank statement into Xero. Other banks are on the Australian banks page.

NAB statement questions
Can I export NAB transactions to CSV?
Usually yes, for recent transactions, from the account's transaction list in NAB Internet Banking. For older periods, download the PDF statements and convert them in BankConv.
What does Cr mean on a NAB statement?
Cr after the balance means the account is in credit. Dr means it is overdrawn, so that balance should be negative in your spreadsheet.
Can I convert a whole financial year of NAB statements?
Yes. NAB lets you download several statements at once, and BankConv converts up to 10 PDFs per batch. Combine the rows into one sheet afterwards.
