Do you need to convert at all?

Online banking for business lets you export transactions as PDF, CSV or QBO/OFX/QFX. National Bank's personal help pages don't describe a transaction export.

In business online banking, up to 10,000 transactions per CSV, QBO, OFX or QFX export (1,000 for PDF), from up to 25 months of history. The transaction view shows the last 7 days by default, so widen the filters first.

What to know about National Bank of Canada PDFs

English or French statements
If you bank in French, look for French headings such as Retraits, Dépôts and Solde, and amounts with a comma for decimals and a space for thousands (1 875,30). Open the CSV with a French (Canada) locale, or check that amounts came out as numbers before you sum them.
Business statements come as a ZIP
In online banking for business, selecting several statements downloads them as one ZIP file, which National Bank keeps for 7 calendar days. Unzip it and upload the PDFs. The statement search covers a date range of up to 2 years at a time.
Dates without a year
National Bank usually prints dates like 3 Sep, without the year. Add it from the statement period; a December statement that runs into January is where it usually goes wrong.

National Bank statements downloaded from online banking are usually text-based PDFs, in English or French depending on how you bank. Each transaction line should become one row; check French headings and comma-decimal amounts after converting.

How to get National Bank transactions as CSV

The route depends on whether you use personal or business online banking.

  1. Business accounts, recent activity: in online banking for business, select the account, widen the filters past the default 7 days, click Export and choose CSV.
  2. Personal accounts, or full statements: open Documents and statements, download each statement, upload them to BankConv (up to 10 at a time), and export CSV or Excel.

Statements are also the version lenders and accountants usually want, because they show the opening and closing balance.

What to check before you import

Use the balances on the statement to check the result, one account at a time.

  • Balance: opening balance plus deposits minus withdrawals should equal the closing balance.
  • Numbers: on French statements, confirm every amount is a number, not text.
  • Year: add the year to each date from the statement period.
  • Overlap: if you also exported a business CSV, remove rows that appear in both.
