Convert BMO statements to Excel or CSV

BMO's own transaction download usually stops at recent activity, so older months have to come from the PDF eStatements in BMO Online Banking. BankConv turns those eStatements into an Excel, CSV or Google Sheets file, keeping amounts deducted, amounts added and balance in their own columns.

Do you need to convert at all?

BMO Online Banking usually lets you download recent account transactions as a file for spreadsheets or money software. The options shown depend on the account type and on whether you use personal or business online banking.

Recent transactions only, and usually from Online Banking on a computer rather than the BMO app. Past statement periods are PDF eStatements, which BMO keeps for up to seven years.

What to know about BMO PDFs

Deducted and added, not debit and credit
Personal BMO statements usually label the money columns Amounts deducted from your account and Amounts added to your account. Both are positive numbers. Keep them as two columns, or build one signed amount (added minus deducted) before you import.
Dates without a year
Transaction dates usually print as short month and day (for example Sep 03). The year comes from the statement period, so check rows on a statement that runs from December into January.
Opening and closing balance lines
The table usually starts with an Opening balance line and ends with a Closing totals line. They carry balances, not transactions, so leave them out when you sum the money columns.

Converting BMO eStatements

BMO eStatements are usually text-based PDFs, so each transaction line normally becomes one row.

  1. Download the monthly PDF eStatements from BMO Online Banking.
  2. Upload them to BankConv, up to 10 at a time.
  3. Check the rows, then export Excel or CSV.

Use the PDF route when you need months older than the transaction download covers, or when an accountant or lender asks for full statements. The statement carries the opening and closing balances, which a transaction download doesn’t.

What to check before you import

The statement summary lists the opening balance, total amounts deducted, total amounts added and the closing balance. Use it to check the result yourself.

  • Totals: sum each money column, leaving out the opening and closing lines, and compare with the summary.
  • Balance: opening balance + amounts added − amounts deducted should equal the closing balance. With an opening balance of 2,480.15, the sample rows above end at 4,628.20.
  • Year: add the year to each date from the statement period.

To bring the rows into QuickBooks, see importing into QuickBooks. Other Canadian banks are on the Canadian banks page.

How far back can I get BMO statements?

BMO keeps eStatements online for up to seven years. Download the PDFs for the months you need and convert up to 10 at a time.
