Convert Halifax statements to Excel or CSV
Halifax's own CSV export only covers recent transactions, so statements for past months have to come from the PDFs in Online Banking or the app. BankConv turns each PDF into Excel, CSV or Google Sheets and keeps the Type column, with codes like DD, SO and FPO, next to each payment. Money in is printed before money out, so check one known payment before you sign the amounts.

Do you need to convert at all?
Halifax Online Banking usually lets you export the transaction list from a computer, with CSV as the spreadsheet format and money-software formats in some views.
Recent transactions only, from Online Banking on a computer rather than the app. Statements for past months are PDF only.
Halifax export formats: CSV, QIF
What to know about Halifax PDFs
- A Type column with short codes
- Halifax statements usually include a Type column with codes such as DEB (debit card), DD (direct debit), SO (standing order), FPI and FPO (Faster Payments in and out) and BGC (bank giro credit). Keep the column; it makes filtering and categorising quick.
- Money in comes before money out
- Halifax usually prints Money In (£) before Money Out (£), which is the reverse of Barclays and some other UK banks. Check one known payment against the PDF before you make a signed amount column.
- Same layout as Lloyds and Bank of Scotland
- Halifax is part of Lloyds Banking Group, and its statements usually look much like Lloyds and Bank of Scotland statements. If you convert statements from several of these banks, the columns should line up, but check the column order once per bank.
How to get Halifax statements into Excel
Halifax has two routes, and which one you need depends on how far back you’re going.
- Recent transactions: in Online Banking on a computer, open the account and look for an export option above the transaction list. Choose CSV.
- Past statements: download the PDF for each month, upload them to BankConv and export Excel or CSV.
Use the PDF route when a mortgage broker, landlord or accountant asks for full statements. The statement carries the opening and closing balances, which a transaction export doesn’t.
What to check after converting
A Halifax statement downloaded from Online Banking is usually a text-based PDF. Check three things before you import:
- Totals: add up Money In and Money Out and compare them with the summary at the top of the statement.
- Closing balance: the last balance should match the closing balance on the PDF.
- Type codes: filter by DD and SO to confirm your regular payments all came through.
If you also bank with Lloyds, the Lloyds statement guide covers the same layout. For Xero, see how to import a bank statement into Xero, and for other banks see UK bank statements.
